17th Sept 07

The Archbishop of Mexico, the Most Revd Carlos Touché-Porter, is in the UK 21-30 Sept, and will be available to comment on Anglican Communion matters.

It's increasingly clear that a few more conservative churches around the Communion are likely to splinter away in the next few months.   At this time it is important for the Communion to have a clear vision of the way forward together.

Archbishop Carlos is Patron of the Inclusive Church network and will be speaking about inclusive Anglicanism from the perspective of the "global centre” at a number of events around the country (see below) ahead of the 2008 Lambeth Conference.

The Archbishop will be available in person over lunch on Monday 24 September 2007 at St Matthew's Church, Great St Peter Street, Westminster, SW1P 2BU (entrance in St Anne's Street) from 12.30 p.m. He can also be contacted throughout the week.

Archbishop Carlos, Primate of the Anglican Church in Mexico, has longstanding experience of inclusion and diversity issues within the Church, including the place of gay and lesbian Christians. He is part of an emerging network of Anglican Bishops based mainly in Latin America ("the Global Centre”) aiming to celebrate the unity and diversity of the Communion.

Archbishop Carlos said: "Inclusion is a reality in the Anglican Church, despite reports to the contrary. I am very much looking forward to being in the UK as part of our preparations for a positive Lambeth Conference.”

During his visit the Archbishop will speak at two Inclusive Church day conferences: "Renewing our Vision - Anglicans and the Global Centre” in London on Sat 22 Sept, and "Celebrating Anglican Diversity” in Manchester on Sat 29 Sept. He will also preach at Southwark Cathedral  (3.00 pm Sunday 23 Sept) and visit local Anglicans in Essex.

Archbishop Carlos was born on 6 Jan 1950 in the State of Tabasco, Mexico. He undertook theological study at St Andrew's Seminary, Mexico City, and the Episcopal Seminary of the Caribbean, Puerto Rico. He has taught at St Andrew's Seminary for 26 years, was consecrated Bishop of the Diocese of Mexico in 2002, and elected Primate of the Anglican Church of Mexico in 2004.

Inclusive Church is a network of individuals and organisations whose make-up reflects the breadth and scope of the Church of England and beyond. We come from differing traditions and differing locations but we are united in one aim: to celebrate and maintain the traditional inclusivity and diversity of the Anglican Communion.
